Why United Church Camping...

Objectives of Christian Camping

Tapawingo was founded by a small group of  United Church ministers and their young families back in 1948 to provide an experience of fellowship in nature.  We are proud to be a United Church camp. The United Church of Canada is a progressive and liberal Christian institution that advocates for social justice issues, and environmental advocacy and promotes a more compassionate and inclusive community.
The United Church supports people of all faith backgrounds and while some people at camp are from the United Church, many are not.  The United Church is welcoming to all and allows for everyone to be their true selves. Our goal at camp is to allow time for reflection and spiritual development by providing an opportunity to live in community with peers, treat each other how we would want to be treated and most of all have fun and make friends while building a community.  Being in nature is one of the best ways to explore one's self, connect to the world and become part of something bigger.

While Tapawingo is a United Church Camp and we do have some formal Christian time through Spiritual Care Time, Vesper Service or Chapel in the woods, it's all very informal and done in a fun "camp way' while being inclusive to all with absolutely no pressure. We try to teach the campers about the Christian faith by being good role models and encouraging all to treat others as they would want to be treated.  Camping is an experience in Christian living in terms of building community and connections in real time without screens-- it's an amazing opportunity to have fun and make friends while experiencing the natural world around us.   The word Tapawingo means “a place of happiness,” and this is what we try to send the campers home with.  Our goal is to provide a positive experience for the campers through making friends & most importantly having a lot of fun in God’s special place.

Our Mission Statement:

Camp Tapawingo builds joyful, tradition‑rich outdoor programs for campers of all backgrounds, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, socioeconomic status or ability, so that they form authentic community and discover their true selves through open‑hearted faith exploration, rooted in United Church values. - updated 2026

Camp Tapawingo is part of the Living Skies Region of the United Church of Canada and, as such, is an affirming ministry.  See our policies page for full policy and rationale

Living Skies United Church Regional Council recognizes the diversity of God’s creation and encourages the full participation of all people in our ministries.
The complete spectrum of human diversity includes (but is not limited to) age, gender identity, racial and cultural backgrounds, sexual orientation, abilities, spiritual beliefs, and all definitions of family.
We make a public, intentional, and explicit commitment to sharing our faith, gifts, and resources to live out God’s call to love, compassion, and justice.
As an Affirming Ministry, we will support an ongoing, engaging, educational process for Communities of Faith and other ministries to understand what it means to be affirming. We will also offer encouragement and inspiration to existing Affirming Ministries.
We honour those who have walked this path before us and we celebrate the opportunity to continue the work.
